<p><strong>As the world faces growing environmental challenges, the need for sustainable innovations has never been more pressing. Among these challenges, transportation stands out as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and resource depletion. But there are important work going on addressing this pressing issue and Clean Motion is part of that. In December 2023, Clean Motion was officially selected as a partner in the GIANTS project together with 23 partners from 11 countries, including automotive giants like Renault and Toyota, tech suppliers, and academic institutions.</strong></p>
<p>The GIANTS Project is a European initiative focused on creating sustainable, affordable, and innovative transportation solutions. Its core goal is to design zero-emission, modular L-type vehicles that are eco-friendly, cost-effective, and adaptable to various urban and rural needs.</p>
<p>Lets take a closer look at this project. What progress has been made? Why is it so important? And what is Clean Motions role?</p>
<h2>What is the GIANTS project?</h2>
<p>The GIANTS project (Green Intelligent Affordable New Transport Solutions) is a 3.5-year initiative funded by the EU under the Horizon Europe program, aiming to develop scalable, affordable, and sustainable solutions for light electric vehicles (LEVs). These vehicles fall under the L5, L6, and L7 categories, suitable for urban transport. The project emphasizes modularity, enabling vehicles to be assembled using standardized components. These include portable batteries, scalable drivetrains, integrated solar panels, and standardized vehicle control systems. A configuration tool will allow third parties to design custom vehicles based on the platform, making the technology highly versatile. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation and is supported by a budget of €15 million over 42 months. Five cities—Brugge, Stockholm, Kisumu, Delhi, and Manila—serve as testing grounds for real-world validation of these vehicles.</p>
<h2>Why this has a Giant impact</h2>
<p>The GIANTS project plays a key role in advancing global sustainability goals by addressing urban transport challenges through energy-efficient designs and promoting circular economy principles such as reuse and recycling. With the aim of producing 1.5 million vehicles annually by 2028, the project is set to have a significant impact in both developed and emerging markets.
At its core, the Horizon GIANTS project strives to accelerate the development of innovative, sustainable transportation solutions. These solutions aim to reduce the environmental footprint of mobility by cutting CO2 emissions, enhancing resource efficiency through lightweight materials and renewable energy, and improving urban living by decreasing air pollution and noise.</p>

<h2>Clean Motions contribution</h2>
<p>Clean Motion leads the way in nano-transport solutions, bringing a wealth of expertise in lightweight construction and energy efficiency to the GIANTS project. Clean Motion plays an important role in GIANTS as an OEM and will adapt the existing light weight electric vehicle EVIG to the GIANTS platform that is being developed in the project.  The project allows Clean Motion to accelerate its development timeline, aligning with its mission to produce energy-efficient and cost-effective urban mobility solutions.

Clean Motion and GIANTS Project: How Smaller EVs Make a Huge Impact

<p>_Electric vehicles are proclaimed as the key to reduce carbon emissions in the transport sector.</p>
<p>However, while EVs do have the potential to significantly reduce emissions, there is another way to reduce emissions: Energy efficiency._</p>
<h2>Background on the Climate Crisis</h2>
<p>Back in 2006, ‘<a href="https://pubs.aeaweb.org/doi/pdfplus/10.1257/aer.98.2.1">The Economics of Climate Change: The Stern Review</a>’ was published. The report concluded that the benefits of strong and early action, far outweigh the economic costs of not acting.</p>
<p><a href="https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas%5FStern">Nicholas Stern</a> later declared that the situation is far worse than he had imagined.</p>
<p>And here we are… almost two decades later, witnessing the devastating effects of not taking enough actions to stabilize emissions.</p>
<h2>The Effects of the Climate Crisis – Worse than Expected</h2>
<p><strong>Inaction on climate crisis is simply not an option – And with CO2 emission on the rise, we need to act now to protect our planet for future generations.</strong></p>

New research indicates that the financial aid needed for extreme weather-related emergencies has already increased with more than 800% in the past two decades. And this might only be the beginning as the climate crisis is rapidly accelerating.</p>
<p>The European parliament also predicts <a href="https://www.europarl.europa.eu/topics/en/article/20190313STO31218/co2-emissions-from-cars-facts-and-figures-infographics">that transport emissions are on the rise</a>, saying that:</p>
<p>“By significantly reducing CO2 emissions from transport will not be easy, as the rate of emission reductions has slowed. Current projections put the decrease in transport emissions by 2050 at only 22%, far behind current ambitions.”</p>
<h2>Why Energy Efficient Electric Vehicles is Key to address the Climate Crisis</h2>
<p>Shifting to electric vehicles will only do so much to reduce emissions, as long as we don’t have a zero-emission energy supply.</p>
<p>And since we don’t, our best chance to reduce emissions is to make our vehicles lighter, more resource and energy efficient. This will drastically reduce the amount of energy consumed. Making it possible for us to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.</p>
<p>Research has shown, that increased resource and energy efficiency is one of if not the most effective and economical tool we have to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb the climate crisis in the transport sector.</p>

If we’re serious about tackling the climate crisis, let’s start by investing in energy efficient electric vehicles.</p>

<h2>The energy demand is growing across all states in India</h2>
<p>India’s energy demand is projected to grow across all states in the years to come. Driven mainly by the industrialization and country’s economic development.</p>
<p>However, securing accessibility, affordability and reliability of India’s energy supply will be a key concern for indian consumers. A challenge that will require major investments in both infrastructure and renewable energy production to solve.</p>
<p>India is to say the least, a major force in the global energy economy. The nations energy consumption has more than doubled since 2000, driven upwards by a growing population, which is soon to be the largest in the world.</p>
<h2>Sustainability trends on the Indian market</h2>
<p>India is aiming to increase its non-fossil energy capacity to 175 gigawatts by 2022 and 500 GW by 2030.</p>
<p>According to <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/india-energy-outlook-2021/energy-in-india-today">The International Energy Agency(IEA)</a>; Over 80% of India’s energy needs are currently met by coal, oil and solid biomass. Coal being the single largest fuel in the energy mix.</p>
<p>The country have been investing heavily in solar energy and currently ranks third in the world in terms of the most solar installations, behind China and the United States.</p>
<p>So as the race to net-zero intensifies, combined with rising vehicle ownerships and road transport use. India is presenting attractive investment opportunities for electric vehicle manufacturers.</p>

The European Commission announces the 100 Climate-neutral and smart cities becoming climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030.

Announcing: The 100 Climate-neutral and smart cities

<p>Change is coming but it will require different!</p>
<p>In the coming days European Commission will announce the 100 European cities that will participate in the <a href="https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/funding/funding-opportunities/funding-programmes-and-open-calls/horizon-europe/eu-missions-horizon-europe/climate-neutral-and-smart-cities_en">2030 climate-neutral and smart city EU mission</a>.</p>
<p>We are big supporters of this initiative
– But will this be an easy task?</p>
<h2>Reaching net zero by 2030?</h2>
<p>The 100 selected cities for the smart cities EU mission will sign a climate contract that aims at transforming these cities into zero emission zones by 2030, and act as an example for how the rest of the world could become climate-neutral and successfully reach the <a href="https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/net-zero-coalition">Paris agreement of net-zero-emissions by 2050</a>. But if urban transportation is to go from a few percent to 100% electric, it will require major investments in vehicles, charging infrastructure, power generation and the electric grid itself.</p>
<h2>The challenge of transforming urban mobility in metropolitan cities</h2>
<p>The current production of electricity in Europe is only sufficient for parts of the electricity need of the future, as the use of electricity is going to increase not only the automotive industry but in society in general.(And for electric cars we need to consider the battery manufacturing as well.)</p>
<p>Vehicle manufacturers have been concentrating on producing high-priced EVs (for obvious reasons), which comes at a premium of at least 50% higher costs compared to conventional vehicles. Simply transferring this cost to the customer will not help making the transition happen any faster.</p>
<p>If we are to meet the growing number of products and people moving in cities and at the same time reach climate goals, by replacing every single fossil fuel vehicle with traditional electric ones, we will be up for a challenge like no other. Especially looking at the 7 years’ time frame until the 100 cities have agreed to be done – despise both potential energy and supply chain shortages.</p>
<p>Even if we managed to replace all of the fossil vehicles with electric cars, these cars still consume ~ 20 kWh/100 km.</p>
<p>Just to put things in perspective. If Germany with a passenger car fleet of approximately 48 million and an annual mileage of 11400 km would go all electric, it would require about 109 TWh. This is equivalent to the output of 24 nuclear reactors. If all on road vehicles including trucks and vans would go electric this number could potentially tenfold, unless we do something different.</p>
<h2>Change requires different</h2>
<p>How do we approach the challenges of the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities mission?</p>
<p>The best way forward is to minimize the energy consumption, by using “low speed” light weight vehicles, designed around the life in cities.
We urge the climate-neutral and smart city applicants to act to quickly scale-up of the implementation and adoption of small, efficient, and affordable electric vehicles.</p>
<p>With a fit for purpose mobility solution like our solar van Re:volt, we can achieve a 5x lower energy and resource consumption, compared to other electric vehicles. That’s different!</p>
<p><a href="https://commission.europa.eu/documents_en">362 European cities</a> have expressed their interest and been found eligible for the mission – but which one of them will be addressing the challenge differently?</p>

<p>Urban delivery drivers are facing increasingly harsh working conditions, such as inconvenient weather, bad air quality, stress, and traffic related dangers on a daily basis.</p>
<p>Today most of the last-mile vehicles consists of different types of two-wheelers, such as cargo bikes, scooters and mopeds.</p>
<p>These types of vehicles do well in urban environments because of their agility, but fail to provide a safe and comfortable cockpit set up for the driver.</p>
<h2>Driver safety and comfort of Re:volt</h2>
<p>In our mission to create the next generation of last-mile vehicles, Re:volt was born.</p>
<p>Apart from optimizing the vehicle to become even more energy efficient, by reducing the weight of the vehicle and integrating solar panels on the roof.</p>
<p>We want to create a safe and comfortable working environment for the drivers, <strong>even when it pours.</strong></p>
<p>The driver is the cornerstone in logistics, especially when it comes to the fulfillment of last-mile and home deliveries in urban environments.</p>
<p>Remember, that the delivery vehicle is the office of the driver and we believe that they deserve a comfortable seat and a roof over their head.</p>

<h2>The last-mile delivery market</h2>
<p>The world has in just a few years seen an acceleration in the development and acceptance of sustainable last-mile delivery vehicles (LMVs) or (LMDs).</p>
<p>According to <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/europe-last-mile-delivery-market-report-2018-2019-2027-1028606774">Business insider</a>, The European last-mile delivery market accounted for US$ 677.0 Mn in 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.1% over the forecast period 2019-2027, to account for US$ 2,491.8 Mn in 2027.</p>
<p>Lots has to do with the targets and goals regarding sustainable mobility set by both industries and governments.</p>
<p>Many start-ups have since the climate revolution entered the scene with cargo bikes and micro vehicles to meet the increased demand for sustainable mobility in the last-mile.</p>
<h2>The driver environment of Re:volt</h2>
<p>With Re:volt we want to create a safe and comfortable driver environment for the driver.</p>
<p>We do this by designing a vehicle that combines the best from two worlds. Re:volt has the comfort much like a car but with the agility of a cargo bike. The enclosed cabin space is equipped with comfortable seats, roomy interior, rear view camera and an extra-large frontal window.</p>
<p>We take driver safety seriously, so with our combined brake system (CBS), three-point safety belt, electric parking brake and regenerative breaking, we commit to giving our drivers the best prerequisites to navigate the city safely.</p>
<p>Another aspect of Re:volt is its incredibly lightweight body, weighting around 350kg, which significantly reduces energy consumption and the braking distance, while enhancing maneuverability. This all contributes to the overall safety and efficiency of Re: volt.</p>

<p>Renewable energy scientist and EV enthusiast Remeredzai Joseph Kuhudzai recently made a news publication and analysis about our latest last-mile delivery Re:volt. The article was published on CleanTechnica.com, a news site focused on cleantech, electric vehicles and solar energy.</p>
<h2>The concept of energy efficient electric vehicles with integrated solar panels</h2>
<p>The article is based around an interview that took place on a video call in the beginning of 2022, between the Commercial Director of Clean Motion, Christoffer Sveder and Mr. Kuhudzai from Cleantechnica.</p>
<p>The interview centered around the philosophy of Re:volt, the future of mobility and how a solar powered EV like Re:volt, proves that the concept of vehicular energy autonomy could in fact be possible.</p>
<p>“We focused on a vehicle that we could put solar panels on the roof that would make the vehicle potentially be energy autonomous and users may rarely need to look for an outlet to charge it.” – Christoffer Sveder</p>
<p>By integrating solar panels on a lightweight EV, the power generated from solar energy is used to transport the load itself instead of being wasted to carry the excess weight of the vehicle.</p>
<h2>Light weight and energy efficiency is key</h2>
<p>Re:volt with its weight of only 250kg, therefor significantly extends the potential driving range of the vehicle, while minimizing the need for charging.</p>
<p>With Re:volt, we want to create a emission free mobility solution that facilitates all the needs of what a conventional delivery vehicle could do and make the transition to an electric vehicle fleet more feasible.</p>

<p>Last year we announced that we started the development of our new electric delivery van, called Re:volt.</p>
<p>Since we announced Re:volt to the public back in September of 2021, we have been focusing all our efforts on product development and engaging with potential customers and partners with diverse transport needs.</p>
<h2>An electric delivery van that charges itself with the sun.</h2>
<p>Support in our efforts of creating the world’s first energy autonomous commercial vehicle.</p>
<p>Last year, we were granted support for a new innovation project by the Swedish Energy Agency. The project is led by <a href="https://www.ri.se/sv">RISE</a> (Research Institutes of Sweden), who along with Clean Motion and three other Swedish companies, BEVI, Micropower and myFC will develop and test, different types of electric drive systems and combine various technical solutions, such as solar cells.</p>
<p>Clean Motion will research about the impact of solar energy for energy autonomous electric vehicles.</p>
<p>Director of Electric Vehicle Technology at Clean Motion, William Collings says:</p>
<p><em>“The purpose of the solar body is to extend the range and in some cases, eliminate the need for conventional charging all together. There is often a lack of charging infrastructure, especially in sunny countries, where the solar body will contribute to electrically powered transport that is otherwise not possible. This, combined with low cost, enables electric vehicles for people who would not otherwise have the opportunity.”</em></p>
<p>Göran Folkesson, CEO of Clean Motion, continues:</p>
<p><em>“Our latest vehicle Re:volt has solar cells on the roof. They provide up to 100km of extra range per day in the right conditions. But if the results of the project are successful, we’ll be able to increase that figure significantly – and hopefully soon eliminate the need for charging stops in many parts of the world.”</em></p>
<h2>Solar energy and electric vehicles</h2>
<p>The history of solar panels stretches itself all the way back to the 1800. And in 1939, Russell Ohl created the solar cell design that is used in many modern solar panels. He patented his design in 1941. In 1954, this design was first used by Bell Labs to create the first commercially viable silicon solar cell.</p>
<p>On Re:volt we have integrated highly efficient solar panels, called IBC.</p>
<p>Solar power is yet another way for us to save energy. It is a renewable source of energy, accessible in places where there is often a lack of charging infrastructure. So, by integrating solar panels on already energy efficient vehicles, such as Re:volt and Zbee. We have a good chance to cut down the cost of charging and propulsion, making electric vehicles able to operate in places with little to no access to charging infrastructure.</p>
<p>This is a big step towards making electric vehicles as self sufficient as physically possible. And in places where solar radiation is high, solar powered vehicles becomes a game changer.</p>
<h2>How do we create the world’s first energy autonomous delivery van?</h2>
<p>We believe that in order for electric vehicles to become energy autonomous, we have to focus on improving their energy efficiency. This is our core mission and by making our vehicles as light as possible we achieve a significant decrease in energy consumption, without affecting performance, safety and comfort.</p>

We have been granted support for a new innovation project, on the use of solar energy in making the first energy autonomous electric vehicle.

<p>Clean Motion has started the development of a self driving and autonomous delivery version of Zbee.</p>
<h2>What is Zbee?</h2>
<p>Zbee, one of the world’s most sustainable vehicles through its design, energy efficiency and light weight body, it has great potential to solve the problems of both congestion and air-pollution in cities. Based on the Zbee technology, we will continue to develop a version that is autonomous and optimized for sustainable deliveries. The strategy comes from utilizing the potential that Zbee has and make it fit-for-purpose for different customers and automation systems, the focus will be on energy efficiency, low cost and multifunctional design.</p>
<p>“Since Zbee is designed to be a sustainable urban vehicle, it is natural to continue to build and automate it, instead of starting from scratch with heavy vehicles that do not belong in cities,” says Christoffer Sveder, Commercial Director at Clean Motion.</p>
<h2>Autonomous delivery vehicles</h2>
<p>The trend of increased urban deliveries, which usually occurs with large fossil-fueled vans, is increasing at a rapid pace, without effective measures this will create enormous challenges for our transport system.</p>
<p>Home deliveries are staff-intensive, which makes it difficult to become profitable with few incentives to switch vehicle types to more sustainable alternatives. By using customized ADV’s (Autonomus Delivery Vehicle’s), deliveries could result in better service, timely deliveries, lower costs and less emissions.</p>
<h2>The GLAD project</h2>
<p>In the project we will be working with Aptiv, Combitech, Halmstad University and RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden). Together we have been granted project funding within the framework of the Swedish Transport Administration’s R&#x26;D portfolio Strategic Initiative, the GLAD project; “Goods delivery under the Last mile with Autonomous Driving vehicles(ADVs).”</p>
<p>“The Swedish Transport Administration wants to have a good overview and increase its knowledge of what is required of the infrastructure when using self-driving vehicles and to ensure that adaptations are made in a way that promotes road safety, reduces environmental impact and increases the capacity of the road network.”, says Hamid Zarghampour, Chief Strategist at the Swedish Transport Administration.</p>
<p>The GLAD project is a holistic project, that will focus on autonomous delivery from a technological and human-machine interaction perspective. Together we will investigate the business models and potential application areas as well as how these are perceived by society.
The project started on June the 3:e and continue for two years.</p>

Update on Autonomus Drive

<p>Quite recently many cities in the world has been flooded with a new way to move around in cities – it’s called e-scooters or micro mobility, and it has actually been an eye opener for people that you can go around in the city in other things than just – cars.</p>
<p>Say what you want about micro mobility, but it has sure made an impact and helped people to start thinking about transportation in new ways. I mean, the big thing as I see it, is that it has shifted the mind-set in some way. I have too tried them – they have given me the fantastic freedom to be even more of a “tidsoptimist” when trying to catch the local bus on time..</p>
<p>Anyway.</p>
<p>There’s still a big gap between micro mobility solutions/bicycles and conventional cars. A good description on what Mini Mobility is was done <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2019/08/12/between-cars-and-micromobility-lies-minimobility-a-self-driving-transportation-revolution/?sh=5c1182313bba">by Brad Templeton in this article</a> published on Forbes in august.</p>
<p>It’s a term that you could describe as the operative space between cars and this micromoblitiy. It uses 1/4th of the space needed from regular cars and an energy efficiency that is 5 times higher. Basically, taking the already existing transportation service models from big Asian cities, like the famous TukTuks/Auto Rickshaws, and apply new improved technologies on it. Together this combination will have great impact on emissions and still give you sufficient protection from the weather elements.</p>
<p>Just as a comparison our vehicle Zbee is only 280kg including our on-board battery. And that’s because its small, but also because we use a highly redefine composite body – no steel structure in the body at all. That is also what makes it comparatively safe in the city environment, and it is an important innovation. We need to keep things small and lightweight because that’s what’s needed if we´re going to cope with emissions and overuse of recourses.</p>
<p>Life is just a long stack of changes, although most of us are actually scared of change. It’s in the human nature to stay within our homeostasis, our bodies have an inbuilt system to maintain balance of the internal eco-system and the current perception of the world. It’s nothing that comes naturally, but without going beyond our selves we’ll never excel.</p>
<p>It’s critical that we do – because we don’ have the time to do business as usual.</p>
<p>I think that, if we start to look at cities from a mini mobility perspective, we can take back urban environment, use less space and have cleaner air. The city will become interconnected in a new way, as we are getting things and people transported emission- and hassle free when bridging this gap.</p>
