EVIG delivers craft beer in Smögen: A whole summer without a charging cable thanks to solar-powered mobility

Sustainably brewed. Sustainably delivered. That’s how Smögenbryggarn does summer.

Smögen, Sweden. Just the name evokes images of salt-sprayed piers, colorful fishing huts, and the bustling life of summer. Here, in the heart of the Bohuslän idyll on the Swedish west coast, life revolves around the sea, food – and beer with character. And this summer, visitors have spotted something new and unexpected on the streets: EVIG, Clean Motion’s solar-powered transport vehicle.

Behind the wheel? Smögenbryggar’n, the local microbrewery operated by Smögen Ale AB. Their unique beers are brewed with local ingredients from the sea, such as seaweed and mussel shells, giving each variety a distinctive depth of flavor and an authentic connection to Smögen’s coastal environment. With its now quiet deliveries of locally brewed beer between the brewery, bars and restaurants around Smögen and Kungshamn, EVIG has both sparked curiosity and become a living example of sustainable urban logistics.

A perfect match for narrow, charming streets

The alleyways of Smögen are picturesque – but also narrow and cobblestoned. A traditional transport vehicle can feel bulky here. EVIG, on the other hand, with its compact size and impressive 300 kg load capacity, glides effortlessly among tourists, outdoor cafés, and boats.

“We deliver beer in kegs weighing between 20 and 37 kilos each – with an electric moped, we’d hit the weight limit immediately, and with other small electric vehicles we wouldn’t have enough space. EVIG swallows the load with ease, works perfectly in narrow alleys, and can be locked quickly when we stop. It’s very practical,” says Jesper Jonasson, CEO of Smögenbryggar’n.

On Smögen’s streets, it means less noise, no exhaust fumes, and more smiles from passers-by. And for the cities and communities of the future, it’s proof that sustainable mobility can be both charming and environmentally smart.

A whole summer without a charging cable

Perhaps the most impressive part? The charging cable was not used once during the entire summer. The sunny weather and EVIG’s efficient design meant the vehicle could be driven, fully loaded, all day long without the battery level noticeably dropping.

“We drove 3–5 trips per day during the high season, usually 3–4 kilometers per round and sometimes up to 8 km. It was a sunny summer in Sweden and the solar panels did all the work. We never had to use the charging cable once,” says Jesper. “There aren’t many mid-sized electric vehicles on the market that meet our specific needs besides EVIG. It’s both practical and completely emission-free. And the fact that it’s made in Sweden is an extra plus.”

Sustainability from beer to delivery

Environmental responsibility is at the heart of Smögenbryggar’n’s operations. The brewery uses water from Lilla Dale, one of Sweden’s best surface water sources, and sources ingredients from local farmers. They work with natural ingredients like seaweed from Nordic SeaFarm for flavor, color, and minerals – not to make the beer “taste like the sea,” but to add character.

Brewing byproducts – malt, hops, and spent grain – are passed on to local bakeries, charcuteries, and the local biogas plant RENA HAV, where the leftovers are turned into biogas. The biofertilizer produced is used by local farms that grow barley and wheat, which the brewery then uses again. This circular mindset makes EVIG and Clean Motion natural partners.

When sustainability becomes everyday life

For Smögenbryggar’n, who tested the vehicle to see how it would perform, EVIG has become more than just a means of transport. It’s part of the brand and a visible proof that locally produced beer can be delivered sustainably – without compromising on function or feel. At the same time, the project shows that solar-powered deliveries aren’t just theory – they work, in real operations, over an entire summer season.
